• wood moulding
• wood glue
• nails

Instructions

• Look at the room you are going to put the bookcase in. Measure the height and width you would like for your bookcase using a tape measure. Go shopping at your local hardware store or lumberyard. They will have a variety of wood choices. You definitely want to use quality wood when creating your bookcase.
• Decide what moulding style you would like to put on the bookcase. You may choose to cut your own moulding using a saw or have your local hardware store cut pre-made moulding to your specifications.
• Assemble your pieces using a nail gun. This will be the frame for your bookcase.
• Measure and attach a wooden backing (luan) to the bookcase.
• Decide how may shelves you will need for your bookcase. Take a look at how large your photo albums and books are. You will want to have enough space for everything. Will you put baskets on your shelves? Size to fit your belongings that will go on the shelf.
• Using wood glue and your nail gun, attach the molding the shelf. You will want to use a clamp to hold the molding in place until it dries.
• You may love the bookcase so much that you want to make another one! Think about what color stain you would like on your bookcases.
• Stain your bookcase using a quality stain. Apply at least 2 coats to the bookcases.
• Set the bookcases dry in a cool dry place. Enjoy your beautiful bookcases!

Things You’ll Need:

1)    Table saw with dado head cutter

2)    Hammer

3)    Screwdriver

4)    Screws or nails

5)    One 12-foot long 2-by-10 piece of wood

6)    Enough 1-by-10 wood for your desired shelving

7)    One panel of ¼-inch plywood

8)    Sandpaper

9)    Wood stain

10) Paintbrush

• Decide how many shelves you want in your custom slim bookcase. Also, determine the width of your bookcase.
• Purchase the lumber. Pine or fir works. Buy enough 1-by-10 lumber for the number of shelves you have chosen.
• Measure your shelf spacing on each side. Allow 3 inches from the floor for the lowest shelf. Measure your tallest books, and allow space for them on the bottom shelf.
• Cut the two side pieces. Using the dado head cutter attachment on your table saw, cut a ½-inch deep by ¾-inch wide groove to hold each shelf.
• Allow 3 inches extra for the top shelf piece as it fits over the two side pieces. Cut the remaining shelves.
• Put the shelves in place. Either nail them in or use wood screws.
• Lay the bookcase on its front. Measure the back. Cut the plywood to fit. Nail or screw it in place.
• Sand the wood as needed. Stain and finish your slim bookcase as desired.
